Congratulations to Chander Payne! Along with our nonprofit partner, The National 4-H Council, we’re rewarding 100 young leaders (ages 13-19) like Chander who have worked tirelessly to bring good to their communities. Each will receive $5,000 to help them continue their goodwill efforts.

Meet Chander

Rhode Island

19-year old Chander is the founder of Urban Beet, an organization focused on bringing fresh food to families through produce boxes, community gardens, and free container gardens. Throughout his community, Chander has established small farms on unused pieces of land at schools and homeless shelters – connecting people with the earth and feeding their community at the same time. By the end of this year, Urban Beet will have an impressive 12 farms in D.C. homeless shelters.

  • Urban Beet has reached 3,600 total pounds of fresh food delivered – and counting.

  • A partnership with Homeless Children’s Playtime Project – an organization that facilitates outdoor play for homeless youth – brought kids to the Urban Beet farm and inspired the homeless shelter farm program.

  • During the pandemic, Chander delivered Free Little Farms – container gardens for growing at home – to 205 families.
